# Ban risk FAQ

> What cac protects against, what it doesn't, and what to do if you get banned.

## What cac protects

cac operates at the **device fingerprint layer**. Every environment gets:

When you run `cac env check`, you can verify all of these are active.

## What cac cannot protect

cac has no visibility into Anthropic's server-side systems. The following are outside its scope:

| **OAuth account**        | Your login identity is tied to an email / GitHub account. Anthropic can see account history regardless of device fingerprint.                            |
| **Payment method**       | Credit card BIN, billing address, and fraud signals are evaluated server-side at purchase time.                                                          |
| **IP reputation**        | Anthropic and Cloudflare score IPs for fraud, abuse history, and data-center origin. A shared or flagged proxy IP raises risk regardless of fingerprint. |
| **Usage patterns**       | Abnormal request volume, concurrent sessions, or API behavior that triggers abuse detection is a server-side decision.                                   |
| **Pre-flagged accounts** | Accounts flagged in a previous incident remain flagged. A new cac environment does not reset account history.                                            |

## "I got banned in 15 minutes — cac didn't help"

A ban within minutes of first use is almost always an **account-layer event**, not a fingerprint event. The most common causes:

1. **The account was already flagged** — previous activity or a shared email/payment method is already associated with a policy violation.
2. **High-risk IP** — the proxy's IP range is flagged as a data-center or abuse-prone ASN. Cloudflare scores JA4 + IP together.
3. **Payment fraud signal** — the card or billing info triggered Stripe/Anthropic fraud detection at subscription time.
4. **Rate or policy limit** — the account hit a quota and was blocked, which can look like a ban.

cac's device fingerprint layer was never involved in these decisions. Running `cac env check` and seeing all green means the fingerprint layer is working correctly — the issue is upstream.

## Checklist before concluding cac failed

* [ ] Run `cac env check` — confirm UUID, hostname, MAC, and telemetry status all pass
* [ ] Check if the proxy IP is a residential or data-center IP (`ipinfo.io`, `scamalytics.com`)
* [ ] Check if the same payment method was used on a previously banned account
* [ ] Check if any other device is sharing the same environment (same `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR`) or the same proxy simultaneously
* [ ] Check `cac env check` output for any `WARN` or `FAIL` items

## Shared environments and multi-device use

Running the same cac environment on multiple devices defeats the purpose of isolation:

* The same UUID, hostname, and MAC appear from different IPs — that combination is anomalous and detectable.
* Concurrent sessions on the same account from different locations are visible server-side regardless of fingerprint.

**Recommendation**: each device should have its own cac environment (`cac env create`). If devices share a proxy, they still appear as different fingerprints — that is the correct setup.

## Reducing account-layer risk

cac cannot change these factors, but you can:

* Use a **residential proxy** rather than a data-center proxy. Residential IPs have lower fraud scores.
* Use a **dedicated payment method** not linked to any previously flagged account.
* Avoid sharing an account across many concurrent sessions or devices.
* Be aware that enabling **"Generate memory from chat history"** (autoDream / extractMemories) triggers extra API calls after every session. This increases token consumption and request frequency — consider whether the increased activity profile is acceptable.
